Lock Repair

A lock that refuses to turn, a mechanism that grinds to a halt, or a handle that simply will not lift — these are the kind of faults that can bring your day to a standstill without a moment's warning. Whether you are at a Victorian terrace in South Croydon, a flat in a block near East Croydon station, or a modern uPVC-doored property anywhere across the CR postcode districts, a seized or misbehaving lock is never a minor inconvenience. It affects your security, your insurer's requirements, and your ability to get in and out of your own home.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to what our customers ask most. Still unsure? Just call.

My key turns but the bolt won't retract — is that a lock repair job or a door alignment problem?+

It can be either, and quite often it is both acting together. When a bolt will not retract cleanly the most likely causes are a worn or broken cam inside the lock body, a striker plate that has shifted out of alignment as the door frame has settled, or a gearbox fault on a multipoint system. Our technician will check the door alignment first because sometimes adjusting the striker plate by a couple of millimetres resolves the problem entirely without touching the lock at all. If the lock mechanism itself is at fault — a common finding on older mortice deadlocks and rim locks in period Croydon properties — we will carry out the appropriate repair or recommend a replacement if the mechanism is beyond economical repair. We always confirm an up-front price before beginning any work.

How much does lock repair cost?+

The final quote depends on several factors: the type and make of lock involved, the complexity of the fault, whether any parts need to be supplied, the time of day or night, and your location within our Croydon service area. We do not give a fixed price without knowing the specifics, but we always confirm an exact quote with you over the phone before we travel — so you know the full cost before anyone comes out. There are no hidden charges added after the job is done.

Can you repair a smart lock or keypad lock, or do I need to contact the manufacturer?+

We carry out smart lock repair and keypad lock repair on most common makes fitted to residential and light commercial premises in Croydon. Faults range from corroded battery terminals and worn motor gears through to control board issues and failed keypads. We will diagnose the fault on arrival and tell you honestly whether a repair is viable or whether replacing the lock unit is the better outcome. If a part needs to be ordered that we do not carry in the van, we will let you know the lead time and arrange a follow-up visit. You are under no obligation to contact the original supplier unless the unit is still under manufacturer warranty, in which case that is worth checking first.

My uPVC door handle won't lift — is that a lock problem or a handle problem?+

On a uPVC multipoint door the handle and the lock mechanism are directly connected, so when the handle will not lift it is usually the gearbox inside the door that has failed rather than the euro cylinder. The gearbox is the component that drives the multiple locking points up and down when you operate the handle. These do wear out over time, particularly on doors that see heavy daily use. uPVC door lock repair in this situation typically involves removing the door furniture and replacing the gearbox, which we carry as a standard part in our vans. If the handle spindle has sheared rather than the gearbox, the repair is simpler still. Either way, we diagnose first and confirm the price before we start.

Do you work evenings, weekends, and bank holidays in Croydon?+

Yes. Addiscombe Locksmith operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including evenings, weekends, and bank holidays. Lock faults rarely happen at a convenient time, and a jammed or seized lock late at night is just as urgent as one that happens on a weekday morning. When you call 020 4542 3118 you will reach our team directly — not an answering service — and we will dispatch a trained, insured technician straight away. We are usually with you in about 30 minutes, though we never guarantee an exact arrival time as road conditions across Croydon can vary.

I'm a tenant — can a locksmith repair my lock without my landlord's permission?+

As a tenant you have a right to access your own home, so if you are locked out or the lock has failed we can attend and restore access. However, any repair or replacement work beyond emergency access should ideally be agreed with your landlord or letting agent, as they are responsible for the fabric of the property. We are used to working alongside tenants, landlords, and letting agents across Croydon and can provide a written report of the fault and the work carried out, which makes it straightforward to pass the details on to whoever manages the property. If the lock failure represents a security risk — a broken cylinder, a failed multipoint gearbox — most landlords and letting agents will want it dealt with promptly regardless of the hour.
